CORONA VIRUS AND PROGRAMME UPDATE

Roundabout Quilters have a responsibility to do what we can to keep our members safe when attending meetings and engaging in group activities. We are keeping updated on daily developments and the advice as issued by Public Health England with regards to the Coronavirus and Covid-19.  We are also in regular contact with our venues (who are being instructed by local authorities and the church).

We had hoped that things could continue as normal, albeit with certain precautions.  However, things have changed very fast over the past few days and it looks like the impact of the virus are going to be felt for some considerable time to come. With that in mind, the committee of Roundabout Quilters have decided that it would be prudent to cancel our meetings with  speakers on April 21st and 12th May and our sewing meetings on March 24th and May 26th.

At the current time, we are hoping that the meetings in June and July can go ahead but we will continue to review the situation and will make a decision on those meetings nearer the time. Thank you for your patience.

Programme for 2017-18

It's September so we are all getting back to normal after our summer break and gearing up for our new season with a shiny new programme at Roundabout Quilters.

Our first talk on the new programme will be with the well-know quilter, author and teacher, Gail Lawther who will be giving her talk 'Birds of a Feather'.

As usual, the talk will be held at the Carnival Hall Basingstoke, at 7 for 7.30pm.  Visitors to the group are welcome (£5 entry fee payable at the door).  We are still signing up member too which costs £40 for the year and gives you access to all 11 talks and 10 sewing evenings throughout the year.

Our Group Quilt is Finished.

This is our group quilt all ready for our show in June.  Thirty-eight members of Roundabout Quilters did a block each and this is the finished product.  Isn't it wonderful?  Every one was given a basic outline, the backing, the fabric for the front and a piece of brown batik for the trunk and everybody was left to interpret their design as they wanted.  We used the quilt-as-you-go method so all we had to do was put the finished blocks together and hey presto a finished quilt!

You can win this quilt by coming to our show and buying a raffle ticket.  This is the star prize.

New Forest Fabrics - the third trader for our show announced!

New Forest Fabrics shop is situated on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Hythe at 14 Shamrock Way, Hythe Marina.  New Forest Fabrics was formed 3 1/2 years ago by Sue Pepper, a quilter of over 40 years.  Sue says, "I come from a long line of shopkeepers and it had been a long held dream to open a quilt shop.  The business has gone from strength to strength and it's a deligh to see so many of our customers enjoy quilting as much as I do".  The shopis open 6 days a week from 10.00am until 4.00pm and the webiste can be found at www.newforestfabrics.co.uk.

Quilt Retreat

I have just been on a 5 day quilt retreat.  It was great fun, there was lots of laughter and lots of arrrrggggghhh's.

We all took projects, some completed UFO's and although I also took UFO's, I actually made 2 tops, one is Dances with Dragonflies of which I made 25 blocks which I now need to square up and then attach to each other, and the second one was a charm pack of batiks which I put together and now will border and then quilt. 

I loved being on retreat and met some lovely people and the food was fabulous especially as there was no washing up. 

When the tops are completed and quilted I will post again.

A Trader for our Show

Viv from, “Purple Stitches” in Basingstoke has agreed to be one of the traders at our show. She is planning to bring Kona plains; pre-cuts and fat quarters; children’s dress patterns and some adult ones. In addition to all of that, there will be Dashwood’s latest fabrics. May sees the launch of Viv’s new “Block of the Month” called, “Chocolatier” and she will have that quilt with her too.

The last year seems to have sped past and it is time to release our new programme for 2015-16 which starts in September.  You can find it on the tab at the top of the page.

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who helped to make our first show such a success. As Chair, I have been showered with compliments and have been busy giving credit to all of you. . . . Roundabout Quilters should be very proud of themselves. 

 On Wednesday, I was able to thank North Hampshire Quilters personally but I also want to thank Loddon Quilters. Both groups willingly gave us information, support and help, most generously. They were also kind enough to come along themselves and have a look. So, thank you everyone! Our next show will be in two years’ time.

Our Show!

Why Not Make a Day of it!

Not only is it the Roundabout Quilters’ Show, but 1.30 on Saturday June 27^th sees the opening of, “Thread, Colour and Stitch”, the Basingstoke Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild’s Exhibition.  It’s at the Willis Museum in the Market Square, five minutes’ walk from All Saints’ Church.  There you can see an embroidery commissioned by the Mayor for the Mayor’s Parlour, based on a Victorian map of Basingstoke.  Work from Basingstoke Young Embroiderers will be displayed and there is a wide variety of exhibits – traditional, contemporary, hand, machine and modern.  In short, there’s something for everyone.

Should you fancy something else, unconnected with textiles, the weekend sees the Cheese and Chilli Festival and a Sunday of family fun.  For further details see www.basingstokefestival.co.uk.

Our Show!

The Show

As Roundabout Quilters approach their second birthday in September, it seems just the right time for our first exhibition.  It will take place on Saturday 27^th June from 10 – 4 and on Sunday 28^th June from 12 – 5.  We have been fortunate to secure All Saints’ Church, Southern Road, Basingstoke RG21 7NP for our show, in this, their centenary year. 

We are a very varied group.  Some members are national prize winners, others are just starting out.  Our quilts come in many sizes and range from traditional to modern and art quilts.  There are wall hangings, cushions and bags.  Since we started we have had five workshops with professional quilters and textile artists and there is a group of work form each of these.

Refreshments will be available in the church hall next door and there you can find our traders: Juberry; Quilters’ Dream and Running Chicken.  We’ve invited them because they have all brought their shops to us and done a talk for the group.  They are people we’d shop form again (and again).

There is a raffle for two I-Spy quilts, a goodies hamper and a sewing hamper.  One of our members, Jane, is the Basingstoke representative of Project Linus and she’ll be able to give you information about Project Linus’s work making quilts for sick children and others in need.

Getting there:

There are nearby public car parks in New Road, accessed from New Road.  Having parked your car, it is a short walk to the church.  Coming by public transport, the railway station is a 15 minute walk away and the bus station is a 10 minute walk.

Quilters Dream

Last Tuesday we had a visit from Janet and Ricky from Quilters Dream.  Not only did they bring some of their wide range of fabrics to sell, they also talked about some of their quilts that they brought with them and told some amusing stories about their experiences in the words of quilting.  It was really interesting to find out more about them and their work.  When you visit their shop they are, of course, doing their best to help you find what you want and are great at suggesting fabrics and offering advice.  It was good to turn the spotlight on them for a while!

Purple Stitches

Viv from Purple Stitches is bring her sale fabrics to our sewing meeting on January 27th next year.  She'll also be coming to talk to us and bring her shop in December 2015.  Meanwhile you can visit "Purple Stitches" within Pride and Joy at Sherbourne St John - well worth a visit and there's a tea room.  What could be better?
